A Sanskrit word meaning “appropriating,” “grasping,” or “clinging,” formed from the prefix up€- (“toward,” “near”) and the stem word d€na (“imparting”). It is used in Buddhism to signify clinging to existence caused by tŠ€ (“thirst” [for sensory experience]) which results in rebirth. See Buddhism, TheravšDa.
