A Sanskrit word meaning non-injury or non-violence as a philosophy of living. It is a fundamental requirement of many of the Yogas, particularly Rāja Yoga, where it is one of the yamas (abstentions). Ahimsā is one of the great vows of the Jainas. See JAINISM.
