Aryavarta

(Āryāvarta, Ārya āvarta). Sanskrit for “Land of the Aryans.” A name given by some to India, but Helena P. . BLAVATSKY states that to do so is incorrect. She defines the word (in TG, p. 33) as “the tract between the Himalaya and the Vindhya ranges, from the eastern to the western sea.” This definition is confirmed by both Macdonell’s and Monier-Williams’ Sanskrit dictionaries. However, in her article “Why I Do Not Return To India” (CW XII:162), Blavatsky refers to “. . . her beloved Aryavarta,” apparently as a name for India as a whole.
