(Real name Louis Marie Julien Viaud) (1850-1923). French writer who joined the Theosophical Society (TS) at Benares (now Varanasi) in 1900. Loti was born in Rochefort on January 14, 1850. He was commissioned in the French navy and reached the rank of ship’s captain. Loti retired from the navy in 1910. He was admitted to the Académie Française in 1891. Many of his novels were translated into English. He died on June 10, 1923.

Publications include: Pécheur d’Islande, Madame Chrysanthéme, Les Désenchantées.
