(L.). Used in a theosophical sense to denote initiated ADEPTS. More generally it implies one who claims special illumination in a religious context. The Illuminati was the name of a religious sect formed in Bavaria by Adam Weishaupt on May 1, 1776. Its adherents sought direct action by Divine Reason leading to a peaceable democratic world order. The movement was based on FREEMASONRY.
