Traditionally believed to be the author of the Rig Veda, one of the large body of texts held to be sacred by orthodox Hindus, and who is revered in Southern India. Agastya is a great hero in the RAMAYANA. In Tamil literature he is said to have been the first instructor of the DRAVIDIANS in religion, science and philosophy.
