In MAHĀYĀNA BUDDHISM, Amitābha is a Dhyāni-Buddha or transcendental Buddha, also known as Amida, Amita, Amitayu, O-mi-to-fo. In Tibet he is known as Od-pag-med. He is also known as the Buddha of the Western quarters.

In popular tradition, Amitābha Buddha has become popular object of worship. The Buddhist adept Tsong-ka-pa is said to be an incarnation of Amitābha Buddha. The Panchen Lama in Tibet is also traditionally regarded as an incarnation of Amitābha Buddha.
