A Sanskrit word meaning “food-made-sheath,” i.e., biological or physical body. It is one of five vehicles of consciousness mentioned in the Taittirīya Upaniṣad (3.1) and is equivalent to the sthūla-śarīra or “gross body” mentioned in the four-fold system of the Vedānta philosophy.
