A Sanskrit word meaning, among other things, “self-restraint” or “self-control” specifically of the senses. It is also the name of the brother of Damayanti in the story of Nala and Damayanti of a Maharsi in the Hindu epic MAHABHARATA, and of a demon encountered in the Yoga-Vasistha, a dialogue, derivative of the Hindu epic RAMAYANA, between Rama and the sage Vasistha.
